Naturally Worn, Western-Tough Full-Grain Leather

Full-Grain Leather

Full-grain leather is the highest quality leather with a natural appearance and texture. Once the hair is removed from the hide, it goes straight into the tanning process. It retains the hide’s natural grain with slight scarring or uneven pigmentation. These marks are not flaws but proof of authenticity. Over time, full-grain leather develops a beautiful patina that cannot be replicated artificially.

Top-Grain Leather

Top-grain leather is the second-highest grade of leather. It is made from the top layer of the hide, but the surface is sanded and buffed out to remove imperfections for a polished appearance. Top-grain leather is easier to clean and maintain. It is also the leather used for hand-tooled patterns or embossing.

Split Grain Leather with Rugged Ranch Appeal

Genuine or Split Grain Leather

A single hide is usually 6–10 mm thick and can be split into multiple layers. While full-grain and top-grain come from the outermost layer, split leather or genuine leather is taken from the layers beneath. It is still real leather and is often used for leather upholstery or to create suede.

Discover the Difference: Choosing the Right Leather for Your Home

You will also find other types of leather in the market at more affordable prices, such as bonded leather, bi-cast leather, faux leather, and vegan leather. However, these budget-friendly options are not as durable as natural leathers. At Runyon's Fine Furniture, we do not use lower-grade leathers that compromise the quality or longevity of our western furniture.

Naturally Dyed for Rich Color and a Supple Finish

Aniline Leather

Aniline leather is dyed with soluble dyes that penetrate the hide fully, preserving its soft feel and natural appearance. Since the surface remains untreated, it retains the leather’s original markings and imperfections. However, this lack of surface protection makes aniline dyed leather more prone to scratches, stains, and fading when exposed to direct sunlight.

Semi-Aniline Leather

Semi-aniline leather is similar to aniline, but the pigmented leather's surface is treated with a light protective coating. The protective topcoat adds durability and a more uniform appearance while still showcasing some natural grain of the animal hide.

Rugged Texture, Rich Character — Built for the Frontier

Distressed Leather

Distressed leather is treated using techniques such as chemical applications, sanding, heat exposure, or oil treatments to achieve an aged or weathered look or to mimic pull-up leather. While the finish may appear rustic and worn, it is carefully engineered by modern tanneries to maintain the leather's durability.

Hand-Tooled and Embossed Leather

Hand-tooled leather is created by skilled artisans using handheld tools to carve detailed, textured patterns into the surface. Embossed leather, on the other hand, is produced by pressing designs into the leather using heat and pressure. This technique creates raised patterns that mimic reptile hides or adds decorative elements, like diamond stitching or floral motifs.
